If you’ve been wondering why Hollywood showed a renewed interest in Colin Farrell recently, it’s all because of his turn in Martin McDonagh’s 2008 film In Bruges. And if Fright Night and Total Recall disappointed, the good news is that Farrell is playing the lead in McDonagh’s latest movie Seven Psychopaths. And it looks great, if the trailer is any indication.

Farrell is joined by Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Abbie Cornish, Olga Kurylenko, Woody Harrelson, and Tom Waits for the movie,  which is scheduled to come out October 12. If it’s anything like In Bruges then it’s going to be funny and weird, a little sexy and clever as all get out. It also looks like a good use of modern Christopher Walken in that it seems to get that he’s become his own universe of quirk. I hope he gets a couple of scenes with Tom Waits.

As the trailer suggests, it’s all about a dognapping going awry, with all the characters relishing the chance to pronounce the name Shih Tzu. There’s also some cameos in the trailer, and a great sense of dark fun. For a decade or so any crime film with a sense of humor felt indebted to Quentin Tarantino (which, to be fair, most were), but the genre is still viable and this looks like a blast. We’ll know for sure this October.

Have you seen In Bruges?
