Oh, Red Dawn—that amazing slice of 1980s cheese in which the Soviet Union decides to kick off World War III with Nicaraguan and Cuban allies by invading small town America, only to be repelled by a group of high school kids calling themselves ‘The Wolverines’ and led by Patrick Swayze and C. Thomas Howell. Yes, really. And, of course, it’s been remade. Yes, really. Here’s the trailer.
The remake has been delayed for some time, as it was initially set to involve a Chinese invasion, but FilmDistrict decided to not annoy the superpower (or alienate it’s powerful box office) by switching the invading force to North Korea. Then, some reshoots, and voila, here’s your remake.
In the remake, group of young heroes seems beefed up in age a bit, as Thor’s Chris Hemsworth appears to be a Marine visiting his old high school town when the invasion strikes. What happens next is a series of images sure to get any Red State voter’s blood hot, all to the tune of an old Filter song for the 1990s. Dig it:
The Red Dawn remake costars Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, Josh Peck, Isabel Lucas and Connor Cruise, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The film is Dan Bradley’s directorial debut (he previously was a stuntman, and second-unit director on Quantum of Solace, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, and The Bourne Legacy. Red Dawn bombs in theaters on November 21.
