Yesterday brought us the news that Joss Whedon was returning to write and direct The Avengers 2. Today, we’ve got news about the other brewing team-up (well, after Guardians of the Galaxy), DC’s The Justice League. Apparently, Warner Bros. has approached actor-director Ben Affleck to direct the film.
Featuring as it will the likely team up of such heroes as Superman, Batman, the Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and possibly more, the Justice League is a huge property for Warner Bros., and after Christopher Nolan turned them down, the company has turned to Affleck. Affleck is also the first director to have read Will Beall’s script for the film.
Affleck has proven to be a solid and classy director, with films like Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and the upcoming Argo under his belt—which is why Warner has already approached him to direct an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand, a 1,152-page novel about the apocalypse.
It’s heartening that Warner Bros. is showing such faith in Affleck, who has revealed himself to be a director of solid, quirky and excellent fare—even if potential mega-blockbuster such as The Stand and Justice League could be a little faceless for his style.
/Film notes, though, that Affleck seems to be done with the superhero genre, though, post-Daredevil:
“No, I would not do another. I was cured of that. That experience was not that much fun. And it’s not something I’m particularly looking to go through again…If there’s anything I can promise you, it’s that the years of superhero are behind me.”
So there you have it—Ben Affleck could direct the Justice League film. Affleck has also gone on record stating that he’ll only direct films that he also stars in… so…Ben Affleck could direct the Justice League film, um, in tights?
What do you think of the Justice League news?
