While Joss Whedon previously stated that he was “very torn” about returning to direct The Avengers 2 after he led The Avengers to worldwide dominion, it was just announced today at the Walt Disney Investors Conference Call that the creator of Buffy the Vampire slayer will be returning to write and direct The Avengers 2.

It was speculated that Whedon may not return for the sequel, seeing as how Marvel is, in /Film’s words, “notoriously cheap” when it comes to contracts; also, Whedon is a creative talent who bristles under studio control (see: basically every Whedon-created television show ever), and The Avengers storyline is sure to follow a Marvel-mandated direction.  And yet, he’s back, after previously stating that “it’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool.”

Moreover, Whedon will not only be helming The Avengers 2, he’ll be “involved in the development” of an ABC live-action TV series that is set within the Marvel movie universe.  No details are available on the series, beyond the rumors that it may be SHIELD-related.
