Though Mads Mikkelson had originally been in talks for the role, it seems Marvel has finally settled on their Big Bad for the upcoming Thor sequel, Thor: The Dark World—Christopher Eccelston. That’s right: the ninth Doctor Who will be your Thor sequel baddie.
As /Film points out, not much is known about the film beyond the title and this most recent casting news. It is known, though, that Eccleston will portray a Thor comics character by the name of Malekith the Accursed (who once held an alliance with Loki), who is a “dark elf” and who leads the Dark Elves of Svartalheim.
In the comics, Malekith the Accursed betrays the strongest of the darks elves, Algrim the Strong, in an effort to kill Thor. Algrim, dropped into lava and seemingly dead, returns as a monster named Kurse and appears to kill Malekith (though he really doesn’t). Um… you got all that? It all sounds a bit swords and sandals-y for some tastes, and these names have essentially broken my spell-check, but it appears as if the Thor sequel is dropping the whole “hey, would it just be cheaper to drop Thor on Earth and film half of this sucker in New Mexico?” elements of the original and diving deep into the wacky mythos of the comics.
Alan Taylor of Game of Thrones is directing Thor: The Dark World, which is set for a November 8, 2013 release.
