The RoboCop remake—despite initially sounding like yet another studio-mandated attempt to capitalize on a popular ‘80s property by cannibalizing it to the bone in the hope that the foreign markets will yield a profit—gets strangely more intriguing with each and every new casting announcement made for the film. And today, add one more to the remake’s surprisingly impressive cast—Jay Baruchel.
While Baruchel is primarily known for comedies such as Knocked Up, Tropic Thunder, and She’s Out of My League, the actor has just been cast in Jose Padilha’s remake of the classic 1980s action film/ social satire, RoboCop. Baruchel will star as “the head of marketing for the fictional company OmniCorp—the cutting-edge corporation responsible for the advanced placements in technology that lead to the creation of RoboCop.”
Joining Baruchel in this curious remake are the already-cast Joel Kinnaman, Hugh Laurie, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish and Jackie Earle Haley. While it remains to be seen as to whether or not this will simply be a pointless rehash of the original or not, hey, at least it will be well-acted, right?
RoboCop is set for an August 9, 2013 release.
