It seems Wes Anderson is keeping himself busy by getting straight to work on a film to follow Moonrise Kingdom, and actor Johnny Depp has already been confirmed to appear in this one – we’ve also got a title; it’s called The Grand Budapest Hotel. Read on for more.

Interestingly, there’s already been a speculatory list of possible actors, including Depp, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Jude Law, Jeff Goldblum, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe and Angela Lansbury. Although most of these remain tentative, at least Depp is now locked in, in what looks to be the actor’s follow-up to The Lone Ranger. Owen Wilson will also have a role.

Among the producers, Scott Rudin (No Country For Old Men, The Social Network) will also be involved, continuing the partnership between director and producer that goes back to The Royal Tenenbaums.

There’s little else we know about the film at the moment, but Anderson has said it will be set in Europe (pretty obvious from the title) and that it won’t be family friendly. Intrigued yet? Asked about whether upcoming films would follow the tone of his last two, Anderson said:

“I think the next movie I’m doing… I have a script that I’ve just finished and that one I would say does not really follow that vein. I don’t think it’s… I would say it’s not very family friendly. (Laughs) I would say I did go from a movie that’s, at least theoretically, meant to be made for an audience of children, which was Fantastic Mr Fox, to a movie that is about children whoever the audience is meant to be. So there’s at least some continuity between those two.”

Depp and Anderson should be an interesting combination, especially as it’s bringing Depp out of the comfortable pattern of his recent work – not that this will necessarily be uncomfortable, but it’ll certainly be different. And change is good (sometimes).
