Sigh, where to begin? First, the villain for the upcoming Star Trek 2 was original series super villain Khan. Then, crewmembers quashed the Khan rumor, saying he’s not in the film at all. And then, the villain was leaked to be Khan once again. Then, Karl Urban, who plays Dr. McCoy in both Star Trek and Star Trek 2, announced Benedict Cumberbatch would be playing original series villain Gary Mitchell. And now, Star Trek 2 co-producer and co-writer Roberto Orci is singing a different tune altogether.
Orci, who has previously stated that Cumberbatch would not be playing Khan or Gary Mitchell, has now announced that Urban was lying, stating simply, when asked :
I would say that I never lie. While Karl tests all those hypo spray props on himself.
That massive thwap you just heard was a few thousand Star Trek fans all whacking their collective foreheads at once.
Orci went on to state that we won’t see a Star Trek 2 trailer until this fall, and that both Cumberbatch and co-star Alice Eve would both be playing preexisting characters in the Star Trek canon, but continues to insist that Khan and Gary Mitchell are not involved.
Further, he added that they will try to keep the villain a secret all the way up to the film’s release:
[We'll keep Cumberbatch's identity a secret] for as long as we can because of our belief that one of the fun things about Star Trek that distinguishes it from other franchises is that the story turns. It isn’t just the spectacle of Star Trek, not just the explosions and the battles, it is the plot. That is why we are so protective of plot and character with this particular franchise. In others that isn’t the case but in this one we can preserve the experience for some people of not knowing exactly until we get there. Will we succeed in keeping it under wraps? Probably not, but we will try it.
“Heh, good luck with that,” says the internet.
