The unconventional Gallagher family of Showtime’s Shameless showed up at Comic-Con yesterday. William H. Macy (Frank Gallagher), Emmy Rossum (Fiona Gallagher), Justin Chatwin (Steve/Jimmy), Jeremy Allen White (Lip Gallagher) and Cameron Monaghan (Ian Gallagher) gathered at the Indigo Ballroom to answer questions by Glee‘s Mike O’ Malley.
Production on season three officially started last week. William H. Macy talked about his transition into a series regular saying:
“To use a theater analogy, we opened well, we got past the second night and now the stretch lays before us. I’m having more that I ever have standing up.”
Justin Chatwin said that his character will continue to be naked throughout season 3.
“I’ve worn clothes in three scenes so far and we’re in episode three.”
Cameron Monaghan spoke about his character’s sexual orientation, saying he sometimes forgets Ian’s gay because his sexuality is not the most important thing about him.
“I forget a lot of the time that he’s gay. Every time I do an interview I kind of have to come out as straight to the audience. He’s a complex guy. He’s got a lot to deal with. It’s less important to think about his sexuality and more important to think about the emotion and stress that he’s going though.”
Emmy Rossum revealed which moment on the show shocked her most:
“The thing that surprised me most was last season with Butterface. The episode where Frank takes the call about the heart coming in. There’s never been an issue where I thought Fiona did a thing that unforgivable.”
Macy quickly said that since he’s older than everyone on the cast, he finds the “whole thing shocking.” Macy thinks that the reason the show works isn’t because it’s shocking thought, but because it has a big heart.
“The reason why the show works is not the shocking stuff but the heart behind it. It’s not the outrageous stuff. It’s the stuff that’s so familiar. It’s about a family that takes care of each other. It’s about blood being thicker than water.”
At some point the panel was asked what they “geek out over,” by which they replied: The Office and Tina Fey (Macy), An Idiot Abroad (Rossum), Pogs and Magic Cards (Chatwin), The Walking Dead and Dexter (Monaghan), everything on Showtime (White), and Phineas and Ferb (O’Malley).
And with that, the crazy Gallagher family left the building.
