Glee—love it or hate it, the annoyingly popular television show has become a staple of modern pop culture, meaning that it’s earned a place at 2012’s San Diego Comic-Con. So, as a preview of the program’s upcoming fourth season (someone’s got to be looking forward to it, right?), executive producers Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan, and Dante DiLoreto, along with stars Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Naya Rivera, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, and Darren Criss, arrived to drop some major spoilers for fans.
Now that we’ve seen a big chunk of the Glee kids graduate in season three, have we seen the last of them? Exec producer Brad Falchuk says not to worry, you’ll still be seeing them:
“Part of what we’re trying to explore now is what happens after you graduate high school and you become an adult: your life changes and your expectations change and it’s really hard to maintain relationships but not impossible… We really want to challenge the characters a little bit more because high school is all about firsts and we want them to have new firsts now: your first love out of high school, your first big breakup, your big breakup and reconciliation, there’s a lot to it.”
Another big change in season four? Sue Sylvester has had her baby—yes, Glee is spawning. Exec Ian Brennan says we’ll be seeing a new side of Sue:
“When we come back in, Sue has had her baby although we still don’t know who the celebrity father of her child is…She’s now Sue with a baby and a different set of priorities but still can’t help but make fun of everyone as often as possible.”
According to Falchuk, now that the big graduation has come and gone, you can expect the storylines at McKinley to be a little more intimate:
“Life is going on in the choir room…It’s a much smaller group in there, which is exciting for us because each story can be a little more intimate and a little more focused in a way because you don’t have 12 people to service.”
Who’s in charge of New Directions now? With the seniors gone, who will lead?
McHale: “I feel like it’s anybody’s game. It’s a battle; I will roll over anybody’s feet to get that crown!”
According to Falchuk, yes, Britney Spears will be returning:
“We were able to take the Britney Spears-themed episode in the choir room and have it in New York and see how that affects the Rachel story line. An assignment for the glee club one week could affect a choice Rachel might make with an assignment at school. We’ve been using that as a way to bind it.”
Britney Spears again? Way to keep your finger on the pulse of America, Glee!
Glee‘s fourth season begins on September 13th at 9 p.m. on Fox.
