Fifty Shades of Grey has locked in its producers. Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti, the team behind David Fincher‘s The Social Network, will rear E.L. James‘ erotic child and hopefully turn it into a decent film. With both of these noted producers aboard, this project, which started off a mere fanfiction, just gained some major cred.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, De Luca and Brunetti were handpicked by the author herself as the duo who would turn her novel into a movie. The producing pair have hooked up with Universal Pictures and Focus Features to bring this steamy bestseller to the screen.
Universal’s Donna Langley expressed her excitement to be joining forces with the producers, saying:
At its core, Fifty Shades of Grey is a complex love story, requiring a delicate and sophisticated hand to bring it to the screen. Mike and Dana’s credits more than exemplify what we need in creative partners, and we’re glad to have them as part of our team.
Ever since the project was announced, many young actresses and actors have been rumored to play the leads, including Ryan Reynolds and Alexis Bledel. Angelina Jolie was also named as a possible director for the movie. Now that the producers have been locked, the casting hunt is officially on.
Fifty Shades of Grey began as fanfiction based on another phenomenon, The Twilight Series. The book tells the tale of college graduate Anastasia Steele’s S&M relationship with 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey. According to the series’ publisher, The Vintage, the books have sold almost 20 million copies in the United States. The work has also been the center of controversy for its open take on pornography.
Even with help of great producers like De Luca and Brunetti, Fifty Shades of Grey is a sketchy project, after all, it did start off as Twilight fanfiction.
What do you think? Can these producers turn Fifty Shades of Grey into something worth watching?
