Though he’s already won an Oscar, Philip Seymour Hoffman has only dipped his toe in big mainstream films, and hasn’t really chased franchises. But it looks like he’s going to be one of the stars of the next two Hunger Games movies, as Hoffman has been added to the cast of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire as Plutarch Heavensbee.
We reported this earlier, but it looks like Hoffman joins Jena Malone as one of the recently casted, and it’s assured that Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth will return. As for the rest, Donald Sutherland seems a lock, though some of the tertiary character may or may not make an appearance. The film starts shooting this fall with Francis Lawrence at the helm.
The one thing that’s been notable so far about this franchise is how it’s got top flight talent involved – even in small roles. People like Toby Jones, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci and Woody Harrelson are some of the finest actors in the business, which makes this sort of like the American version of the Harry Potter films. And like those films, it also means that a lot of talented actors often have very little to do.
Hoffman will be coming off Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master, which is one of our most anticipated films of this year. And judging by the response to the first film, it seems Catching Fire is going to be one of the most anticipated films of 2013.
Who would you like to see join the cast?
