Ok, Star Trek 2, this “who is the film’s villain?” thing is getting old. First it was it Khan, then it wasn’t Khan, then it was Khan again. Sure, we could wait until 2013 to find out, like mature human beings, but that simply isn’t what the internet was made for. Which is why a recent interview with Star Trek 2’s Karl Urban (he plays Dr. McCoy) is raising some online eyebrows—as he explicitly says the name of the villain (and it isn’t who you think).
So far, all we know for sure is that Benedict Cumberbatch plays the lead villain of Star Trek 2. Ever since, speculation has ceaselessly erupted from the internet, conversely announcing that Cumberbatch would be playing the classic original series (and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) villain Khan, then announcing that he wouldn’t be playing Khan at all.
However, in a recent interview promoting his upcoming film Judge Dredd film, Dredd, Karl Urban let an interesting tidbit about Cumberbatch slip:
He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.
Who is Gary Mitchell, you ask? In the original series episode (and second official pilot), Gary Mitchell was an Enterprise crewmate and old friend of Captain Kirk’s. In the episode, Mitchell, while crossing a galactic barrier, becomes imbued with godlike powers, and begins create havoc for the Enterprise crew, leading to a murderous showdown with Kirk.
So is this the Star Trek 2 villain? Well, in late 2010, a source hinted that Mitchell could/ would indeed be the villain:
It’s definitely a character that will make fans of TOS excited. Think along the lines of Harry Mudd or Trelane or Gary Mitchell or the Talosians or the Horta. Actually it’s one of those that I named.
That said, Star Trek 2 producer and co-writer Roberto Orci recently stated that Gary Mitchell is one of five classic original series characters that is not in the film.
So, what’s happening here? Did Urban accidentally reveal the bad guy, or was this misinformation on his part? Or is Urban correct that the film will feature a take on Mitchell, but, as Orci said, the character won’t be named Gary Mitchell specifically?
What do you think about the latest Star Trek 2 villain information?
