For those who have been wondering exactly what the deal is with Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, look no further: Wright spent a week earlier this month “shooting footage for a reel that will be used to test out the potential look and tone of his movie, as well as to decide how convincing Ant-Man’s powers look on screen.” Ooh, curious now? Read on for more.
Wright himself had no comment on the situation, but the existence of an Ant-Man test reel at all could suggest that whatever Wright and co-writer Joe Cornish have on the page, Marvel and Disney may not give it the official greenlight without knowing for sure they can pull it off. Interesting.
It could have something to do with the main character, Hank Pym (Ant-Man), who is able to radically change his size in either direction, super small or super big. Perhaps Disney executives are having a hard time picturing how a movie about a man who is the size of an ant would work, especially as a big budget action movie – but with an ant-sized hero, the potential be be creative and have a bit of fun is certainly there. It could work, which is why they’ve gotten to the stage of the test reel already.
Also, Hank Pym’s character famously has another trait – wife beating. Some fans could get downright outraged if Hank is not true to the original character, which includes beating his wife every other minute of the day. Could mark a problem for Disney, no?
Either way, Ant-Man will likely not start filming until later this year or early next year as per a recent interview, what with Wright already committed to doing The World’s End in the next few weeks, which he co-wrote with Simon Pegg.
It hasn’t just slipped by fans that this reel has been shot just a few weeks before San Diego Comic-Con, and there are already murmurs of excitement that there could be shown as some kind of sneak peak showing. After all, on the off-chance Kevin Feige were to announce to Hall H: “Who wants to see some Edgar Wright directed footage of Ant-Man?” the place would damn near go through the roof. It’s certainly possible.
What do you think about the Ant-Man test reel? Do you think we’ll get to see it at Comic-Con?
