David O. Russell could be described as mercurial, so it’s fascinating to see what he’s doing with his post-The Fighter success clout. His next film is Silver Linings Playbook, an adaptation of the best selling book, and it looks like a quirk-fest, albeit one with a great cast that includes Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Chris Tucker.

And yes, it’s that Chris Tucker, who hasn’t spent much time on screen outside of the Rush Hour movies for the last decade. That makes this sort of exciting, as working with Russell means that Tucker may be interested in doing some acting, like real acting. And he was good, or he could be. Unfortunately the “damaged people finding love” side of this narrative looks a bit shopworn. But the same could have been said from the outset about The Fighter, and that turned out pretty well.

The film is due November 21st, which means it’s definitely going to be an awards contender. I don’t know if the Academy is ready to give a gold statue to Cooper yet, but if Jennifer Lawrence is in the supporting category, it could be her’s to lose. She’s had a great year, and she is one of the most promising talents around. And – depending if it’s a weak year or not- she could even win best actress, because it’s definitely her year.
