One film we’re waiting on pins and needles for in 2012 is Rian Johnson’s (Brick) Looper—a twisted, time-traveling thriller starring Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Jeff Daniels and Emily Blunt. The first trailer was an intriguing tease, the second, international trailer, though, gives you the entire premise (while not giving away absolutely everything).
Here’s the basic premise (just in case you can’t glean it all from the trailer):
Looper takes place in a world in which time travel exists—about 30 years in the future, that is. And when the mobs of the future want to whack someone, they send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” (the nickname for a button-man/hired hitman) is waiting there to execute the target. Joe (Gordon-Levitt) is one such looper, and is getting rich off of his position. One day, however, the future mob elects to “close the loop”—they send back Joe’s future self (Willis) back to the past for Joe to execute.
Dig the trailer to get that all straightened out:
Not band, no? Looper looks pretty incredible, and Johnson is an adept and gifted director. Looper may well be the end-of the summer flick that finally saves what has been a rather long dry spell of entertaining summer films. Looper hits theaters on September 28, 2012.
