We liked The Newsroom, but HBO’s latest series has been something of a love it or hate it type of deal. Aaron Sorkin’s return to television after an Oscar winning script for The Social Network and Oscar-nominated with Moneyball is definitely buzzed about, and for those looking to give a look, HBO put it on youtube for anyone to watch.
The show stars Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, John Gallagher, Jr., Alison Pill, Dev Patel, Olivia Munn, Thomas Sadoski, Sam Waterston, and Jane Fonda, and already it’s been beaten up by The New Yorker and The A.V. Club, though the bad buzz is also starting to build a backlash-backlash.
The big thing is that the pilot – with Jeff Daniels having his breakthrough would-be Network moment – is that it’s very reminiscent of Sorkin’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which opened similarly. That was a show that had a great pilot, and quickly flamed out. It was a show of great premise and little delivery. On top of that, Sorkin doesn’t seem to understand how Network worked, in that that film didn’t offer any solutions, it just painted the picture of lowering standards that sadly came true. Trying to show the right way can be patronizing.
Anyways, here’s the youtube link. We’d embed, but it’s not allowed. Watch it and tell us what you think.
So, what did you think?
