Fans of Dumb and Dumber, the 1994 Jim Carrey vehicle that proved he could carry a film without talking out of his ass, have a reason to mourn today: Carrey has officially quit Dumb and Dumber 2.  That’s right, Dumb and Dumber 2 just became Just Dumb, Minus the Dumber One, Part 2.

Carrey had previously expressed enthusiasm for making a Dumb and Dumber sequel, as well as a follow-up to Bruce Almighty: “We’re talking about maybe returning to some old characters that everyone has been asking about…There’s Bruce Almighty and we’re talking about maybe another Dumb and Dumber.”

So why the about-face?  Reportedly, Carrey felt that the studios behind the film, New Line and parent company Warner Bros., have “showed a lack of enthusiasm” for the Dumb and Dumber 2 project.

In a statement to ETOnline, Carry quipped, “I would have thought Dumb and Dumber To was a no-brainer, after all it’s implied in the title.”

Dumb and Dumber 2 was originally set to begin production this fall, with Jeff Daniels returning as well, along with writing-directing team the Farrelly brothers.  According to Peter Farrelly, the film takes place ” 17 or 18 years later. It’s not like a month after that happened. It’s today. And we explain what they’ve been doing all those years.”

The production status of Dumb and Dumber 2 is now in questions—it is unclear as to whether or not the film will go on without Carrey.
