For years, rumors have swirled around the possibility of a Barbarella remake. The ridiculously campy original 1968 film—itself a comic book adaptation—featured Jane Fonda as an outer-space super-spy who battled a baddie named Duran Duran, an evil lesbian space queen, and a machine that kills you with orgasms, all while teaming up with an angel (literally) and discovering that having sex with every man she meets solves nearly every one of problems. First, Robert Rodriguez was set to direct a remake, then Robert Luketic, then… nothing. Now, Nicolas Winding Refn, the director behind Drive and Bronson, will direct and be the executive producer for a Barbarella TV series.
As it turns out, Gaumont International television (the same company that is bringing us Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal Lector TV series) is teaming up with Martha de Laurentiis and Refn to bring Barbarella to the small screen, for some strange reason.
It’s a strange property to turn into a TV series, though Refn has called Barbarella “one of the ultimate counter-cultural characters.” The biggest hurdle, however, will be in finding an actress who can fill Jane Fonda’s thigh-high space boots—the only real reason the film worked (during the moments it actually worked) was mostly due to Fonda’s bizarrely charming portrayal of the hypersexual space agent/ “Queen of the Galaxy.”
Who do you think should play Barbarella?
