While it features no one bellowing “I HAAAM DAAAA LUAAAWWW!” like the 1995 Judge Dredd adaptation starring Sylvester Stallone, the very brief teaser for Dredd does feature 10 seconds of condensed badassery, perquisite dramatic/ slow-motion action sequences, and lots of bulky helmets. Check it out.
Directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point) and written by Alex Garland (Sunshine, 28 Days Later), Dredd stars Karl Urban as the titular judge, and Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson. The full trailer hits tomorrow, but, of course, we had to receive a teaser for the trailer first.
We don’t see much, but Urban does pull off the costume, at least. Not much of Mega-City One is seen either, but hopefully tomorrow’s trailer gives us a more in-depth look.
Dredd is set in a future in which Earth has been blasted by Atomic Wars, and survivors inhabit Mega-Cities, which offer protection from the rest of the Earth, which is a desert populated by radioactive mutants. The setting is Mega-City One, in which police are also judges and act as judge, jury and executioner on the spot when capturing murderers. Judge Dredd is one such judge, and he teams up with Thirlby’s Anderson to “track down a terrorist organization lead by Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), who is responsible for selling a reality-altering drug called Slo-Mo.”
Dredd is set for a September 21 release.
What do you think of the teaser footage?
