Ever wonder why Maleficient, the villain from Disney’s 1959 classic, Sleeping Beauty, was such a poisonous jerk towards Aurora (a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty) in the beloved cartoon? Well, Disney’s upcoming Maleficent will answer that question for you, courtesy of Angelina Jolie and a giant set of horns.
Walt Disney Studios announced today that production has begun on Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie as the titular “Mistress of all Evil” who decides to kill young Aurora before her 16th birthday. The film will be directed by Academy Award winning production designer Robert Stromberg (Alice in Wonderland, Avatar), and will be his directorial debut. Maleficent was written by Linda Woolverton (The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast).
In addition to Jolie as Maleficent, Elle Fanning will play Aurora, and will be joined by costars Sharito Copley, Same Riley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville. Disney describes the film as “the untold story of Disney’s most beloved villain, Maleficent, from the 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty. The film reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora. “
Maleficent is set for a March 14, 2014 release, and will be, of course, released in 3D.
