After director Neill Blomkamp spectacularly burst onto the scene with his stellar 2009 science fiction film District 9, he’s been keeping relatively tight-lipped about his second feature film, Elysium. Now details of the plot have been released, revealing it’ll be a sci-fi tale laced with socio-political concerns taking place a hundred years or so in the future. Sound good? Read on for more.
So far there have been many rumors surrounding the project (which seem to have quietened down since the film has moved into post-production), but here’s what we do know: the movie is set to star Matt Damon (who we know sports a shaved head at one point), and Jodie Foster as the head of an off-world state. Wagner Moura has also signed on to play the villain.
Now we have the first plot synopsis of the film:
“In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.”
