How’s this for a series of horror movie clichés?  Down on his luck writer moves his family to a haunted new place and becomes entranced with the old records of the past that he finds there (The Shining).  Mysterious ghoul that lives inside of film and uses it as a medium to transmit itself into the real world (Ringu/The Ring).  Creepy home movies show a family terrorized by an evil spirit (Paranormal Activity series).  Well, the Sinister trailer has them all.

That said, the Ethan Hawke-starring film received great press when it premiered at SXSW this year, garnering solid to good reviews.  Directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) and written by C. Robert Cargill the film is, if the reviews are to be believed, one that transcends its influences.  Still, found footage really has begun to get old, though the film seems to wield it a little differently, as it only appears as the snippets of 16 mm film viewed by Hawke.  Check out Summit’s trailer and decide for yourself:

So, spooky?  The trailer has at least a few good jump-scenes, even if it does do at least one “creepy little kid” scene too many.

Sinister will be released on October 5.
