Looking just as terrible as it sounds, the trailer for Resident Evil: Retribution 3D is an amazing mish-mash of cinematic rip-offs. Stealing from sources as desperate as Total Recall to the Dawn of the Dead remake, it’s about what you’d expect from the fifth film in a series of video game adaptations from the guy who previously directed Mortal Kombat and Alien vs. Predator.
I’ll say that again: this is the fifth film in a series of video game adaptations from the director of Mortal Kombat and Alien vs. Predator (Paul W.S. Anderson). If that doesn’t tell you everything you need to know about Resident Evil: Retribution 3D, proceed at your own peril.
Opening with a rip-off of Total Recall (Milla Jovovich has been implanted with false memories of a happy life) before tearing a page from Dawn of the Dead (the film opens with zombies invading a happy home, and Jovovich running outside to see her neighborhood in ruins), the trailer then becomes a series of bad movie clichés. Smarmy bad guy in sunglasses? Check. Things gratuitously flying at the camera in 3D? Check. Bad CGI and one liners? Check.
While it does look like more effort was put into this film than the previous four put together, one has to remember: the name of this film is Resident Evil: Retribution 3D. Avoid accordingly when the film hits theaters on September 14, 2012.
