Because it’s the one sequel that the whole world has been endlessly clamoring for ever since 1986, rumors of a Top Gun 2 have occasionally floated to the surface of pop culture news throughout the past several years, bubbled, and then disappeared.  Unfortunately, though, Tom Cruise refuses to allow such pop cultural belches from simply floating off into the ether—rather, he’s pushing for a Top Gun 2 with the original’s director, Tony Scott, as well as Jerry Bruckheimer.

MTV News recently met up with Cruise on the red carpet of the Rock of Ages premiere in Los Angeles last week, exclaiming that “we’re working on it.  We’ll see what happens, if I can figure out the script and we get it.  It would be fun getting into those jets.  I want to get in those jets!”

Of course, don’t get too cranked up into the Danger Zone just yet, Top Gun fans, as Cruise said something extremely similar in 2011 when he noted that “I hope we can figure this out to go do it again…if we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot Top Gun.”

Which, essentially, means that Top Gun 2 will be shot as an MTV commercial for the Air Force Naval aviation that contains a disquieting amount of beach volleyball.
