Oh, has this ever been a long time coming. After having to parse over set photos and posters for months, we finally have the first trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. The story of an escaped slave, a bounty hunter, and dark mission through the Civil War-era south, Django Unchained looks like typical Tarantino: bloody, funny, quirky, and, well, awesome.
The trailer gives the basic story away, without revealing too many spoilers. Christoph Waltz plays a bounty hunter out to kill a group of masked, slave-running brothers. The only man to have seen their faces is a slave named Django (Jamie Foxx), who agrees to help the bounty hunter in exchange for both his freedom, and the rescue of his wife from evil plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).
As for the scenes themselves—DiCaprio’s Candie steals the show, as the actor seems to be moving out of his brooding, brow-furrowed phase, and instills Candie with a wild-eyed and rotten-tooth charm. You don’t get much from Foxx or Waltz’s characters, beyond the fact that Django is badass who enjoys “killin white folks” that run slaves. Beyond that, much of the film is still a mystery (which, isn’t a bad thing, in this age of spoiler-heavy trailers). Check out the trailer below, and see if you can make it all the way to the film’s release this Christmas.
