What, an animated film based on an original idea? How did this happen? Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph started building buzz at D23 when a little bit of the film and its premise was made public. But now we have a trailer, and though it seems to borrow a little from the Toy Story formula, this looks like a winner. Check out the trailer…
The film features voice acting by John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jane Lynch and Jack McBrayer, but for many the stars of the film will be the cameoes by famous games of the golden age. You can see Pac-Man, Qbert, Bowser, Zangief, and many other famous characters from arcade games of the past. It’s being directed by Rich Moore, who spent time on both The Simpsons and Futurama, so it’s got a lot going for it. The film comes out November 2, 2012.
At D23 there was a standup arcade game for the film, but – at the time – it didn’t work. There is a rumor that there will be an arcade version (and likely some home video and phone iteration) when the film hits theaters. This definitely plays on a nostalgia for gaming that could be as powerful as something like Toy Story, though it’s unknown if it will create new sympathy for Donkey Kong.
