Here’s some interesting news—one the post-Avengers Marvel films slated to hit your eyes in 2014 is the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger. That’s not a surprise; the likely directors, however, is the kicker: brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, previously know for directing episodes of Community, as well as the 2002 full-length crime comedy, Welcome to Collinwood.
While Joe Johnston directing the first Cap film (his work on The Rocketeer made him a perfect fit) clearly made sense, Marvel being in talks with the Russo brothers is a riskier move. Sure, Welcome to Collinwood wasn’t a great film, but their genre-bending work on Community might make them just the directors to wrench Captain America’s WWII aesthetic into the 21st Century.
Not much else is known about Captain America 2, besides that fact that Captain America: The First Avenger screenwriters Chris Markus and Stephen McFeely writers will be returning to script the sequel, and that the official release date is April 4th 2014. One other thing is for certain, though—if the Russo brothers can bring an ounce of the humor and all-out strangeness to Captain America 2 that they have given to Community, this sequel is going to be one wild ride (we hope).
