Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone are in talks to star in a new boxing comedy from director Peter Segal (Tommy Boy, Anger Management), that would see two retired boxers return to the ring for a final Grudge Match. A boxing film about a battle between the men who played Raging Bull‘s Jake La Motta and the great Rocky Balboa, respectively, once again throwing punches on the big screen? Sounds good, doesn’t it?
We first heard about the possibility of this happening back in October 2010, when the casting of Sly Stallone and De Niro seemed like a far-off pipe dream. Now it’s actually happening, with plans to hopefully start shooting Grudge Match early next year.
It should be interesting to see where Segal takes this as a director, considering his last truly great comedy was Tommy Boy starring the late Chris Farley, which was followed by such fare as My Fellow Americans and 50 First Dates.
And what of De Niro and Stallone? Well, De Niro’s comedy career has been somewhat lacking recently, with the disappointing Little Fockers and a very phoned-in small role in New Year’s Eve. But that’s nothing compared to Stallone, who (justifiably) hasn’t led a comedy since Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot – but that’s not to say they can’t pull this one out of the bag, and it’s sure to attract a lot of fans, at least. After all, two of cinema’s most iconic boxing actors, starring together in a solid comedy could actually prove to be a huge hit – if a solid comedy is indeed what we get. Otherwise, could they be potentiallyspoiling the legacy of two great movies? We’ll just have to wait and see.
We’ll keep you filled in with all the latest details as they’re announced, so don’t forget to check back.
