Though it premiered at the Cannes festival to modestly positive reviews, we’re still hungry to see Tom Hillcoat’s Lawless – which stars Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain and Guy Pearce – something fierce. The film doesn’t come out theatrically until August, so we’ll have to make due with this new clip from Hulu.
Here we see the two bottlegging brothers played by LaBeouf and Hardy having a heart to heart after a scuffle. It looks like LaBeouf was on the wrong side of the argument and got walloped, which would explain his bloody eye. Hardy then breaks down why he shouldn’t have behaved as he did, and the scene ends. Like a number of Cannes films, there are often one minute scenes made available to the general public to preview why they are in competition. This seems to be that sequence.
The film was written by John Hillcoat and Nick Cave, and yes it’s that Nick Cave, former frontman of The Birthday Party and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. This isn’t his first script, as he he wrote Hillcoat’s previous films The Proposition and Ghosts… of the Civil Dead. Trivia: Cave was once attached to write the prequel to Ridley Scott‘s Gladiator.
Things will heat up for the movie if it wins any prize at the festival. Otherwise, look for it as Fall starts.
