Between Katniss in The Hunger Games to That One Guy No One Cares About But Jeremy Renner Is Contractually Obligated To Star In Everything in The Avengers, to Merida in Brave, the viewing public can’t seem to get enough of people shooting at bad guys with a bow and arrow. Or, rather, Hollywood thinks we can’t get enough of it, because The CW is set to launch a TV series adaptation of DC’s Green Arrow comic (perhaps to fill the post-Smallville void), and the archery abounds. Check out the trailer for Arrow below.
It’s all very basic superhero stuff, and it seems like a very Batman Begins-styled take on a hero’s origin story—spoiled rich kid leaves America, faces tough times for a few years, grows a beard to show how ragged, rugged and intense he is now, returns to his city to find it besieged with crime, and decides to use his recently developed survival and fighting skills to bring justice to the populace. But with a bow. And some arrows. Because, as The Avengers has shown us, somehow a bow and arrow works better against an army of bad guys than, say, a machine gun.
That silliness aside, the trailer doesn’t look half-bad, and it even has the prerequisite “local police will crush this mysterious vigilante while at the same time develop a grudging respect for his off-the-grid crime-fighting” plot shoehorned in. Hey, it’s worked for Batman, right?
Arrow will air on The CW this fall, Wednesdays at 8 PM, and stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen/ Green Arrow.
