Film fans have been anticipating this for years, and now it’s finally happening! Edgar Wright is set to direct The World’s End, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, as the third film in the “Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy” (also been referred to as the “The Three Flavors Cornetto” trilogy, with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz being the first two entries). Filming starts in September for a Spring 2013 release. Be the first to read the plot details after the jump.
News on the story’s plot was broken by Deadline, and goes as follows:
20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.
So far, the first two movies have been twists on popular horror movies (Shaun of the Dead) and action movies (Hot Fuzz) – so what can we expect for The World’s End? Rumor goes, it’s a play on disaster/apocalyptic movies, but so far there’s been little mention of that until the second-to-last line of the description: “They realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s.” Sounds like an unlikely group of (possibly drunk) men getting caught up in some sort of survival struggle for all mankind – so far, so good!
Keeping to the tradition of the first two films, The World’s End script was co-written by Pegg and Wright, and is expected to contain a plethora of references from movies/pop culture.
