Now that Iron Man 3 is set to start production this summer, you can expect a bevy of casting news and (potentially) spoilers to start spilling forth from the Marvel offices. Just last week, we reported that Ben Kingsley was being cast as the film’s villain (rumored to be Mandarin), and now we can report that Lockout star Guy Pearce has been given a crucial role in the third Iron Man film.
Iron Man 3’s plot is based upon Warren Ellis’ six-issue Iron Man comic Extremis, in which nanotechnology (essentially, technology that works at an atomic level) is brought to the fore in Tony Stark’s technology, and how a nanotech virus later develops. In Extremis, the nanotechnology (which eventually ends up in the hands of terrorists) was co-created by two scientists, Maya Hansen and Aldrich Killian.
It was announced on Friday that Pearce (L.A. Confidential, Memento) has been cast as Killian.
In Extremis, Killian takes part in allowing the nanotechnology to fall into the hands of a domestic militia. While it is unclear as to whether or not Killian’s role in Iron Man 3 will be the same, one thing is for certain—Pearce takes anything he does and makes it charismatic and edgy. Iron Man 3 just got a lot more interesting.
Iron Man 3 will being filming in North Carolina in May, and is set for a U.S. release on May 3, 2013.
