Well, in case you were hoping to avoid any potential spoilers about who would survive the ending of the upcoming Avengers film, Marvel and Disney went ahead and spoiled that somewhat by announcing today that the sequel to 2011’s Captain America will be seeing the First Avenger return to the big screen on April 4, 2014.
It’s not an entirely surprising development—despite Avengers director Joss Whedon’s tendency to kill off his major characters—that Cap survives The Avengers, as the first Captain American: The First Avenger film did solid business (almost $400 million worldwide) and Marvel has essentially dedicated itself to ensuring that every single released film over the next four years contain at least 14% Marvel content or characters.
/Film has is that Captain America 2 (no word on the official title yet) “will pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.”
Prior to this announcement, Marvel had two “mystery films” slated for a 2014 release. Now that we know one of those two films is Captain America 2, the question remains—what is the second mystery film? Will it be an Avengers sequel, or a new stand-alone film?
