It’s been a big week for Matthew Weiner—not only did the creator some little show on AMC call Mad Men score record ratings on Sunday night with the MM fifth season premiere (I’m still humming “Zou Bisou Bisou,” by the way)—he just snagged Owen Wilson and Zack Galifianakis to star in his big-screen directorial debut, You Are Here, with Parks and Rec star Amy Poehler in talks to co-star.
The former Sopranos writer/executive producer wrote and directed You Are Here, which will begin production in May of this year and will shoot in South Carolina. Weiner has previously directed several episodes of Man Men.
The film will feature Owen Wilson stars as Steve Dallas, a “local weatherman and freewheeling bachelor” who teams up with his bi-polar best friend (Galifianakis) for a road trip to visit Wilson’s father’s home after news of his death arrives. Upon arrival, Dallas’ friendship is “tested by the complications of his inheritance, his sister Terry’s (Poehler) ambition, and Steve’s desire to be with his father’s beautiful young widow Angela.”
While the road trip dramedy is a genre that’s been done to death, Weiner has proven himself as a writer/director who can subvert cliché and convention when it suits him—here’s hoping You Are Here doesn’t come out of the oven tasting like a reheated Alexander Payne film.
What do you think of the You Are Here news?
