At a recent South By Southwest panel, Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane made an appearance entitled “A Conversation with Seth McFarlane,” in which he discussed not only his career, but the his upcoming reboot of the The Flinstones TV series. He also noted that the new Flintstones cartoon will be a lot like The Simpsons in the mid-‘90s. So it will basically be like everything else McFarlane does, then (rimshot!).
McFarlane stated that the pilot episode is still being written, and, as far as tone goes, he will “keep it more or less the same” to the original but at the same time, “a little more current.” He went further to say that the so won’t be as rough-edged as cartoons like South Park or Family Guy, in that “we’re kind of shooting for the level of edge in mid-’90s Simpsons—you’re not going to see abortion jokes.” Which is mildly amusing, as “making it like The Simpsons” seems to be the guiding principle of McFarlane’s career. So now he can kill two sacred cows at once—both The Simpsons and The Flintstones. Pretty exciting, huh?
What do you think of McFarlane’s plan to bring The Flintstones back for the 21st Century?
