The Office” heads south to Florida as Dwight and his hand-picked office team prepare for their special project in Tallahassee. The return of Todd Packer and the sassy Nellie Bertam, last seen trying to score Michael Scott’s old job, provide a nice, comedic spark to an already funny episode. “Tallahassee” keeps the momentum going from last week’s equally strong episode.

Episode: “Special Project”

After Dwight and his team arrive in Tallahassee, Dwight competes with his Dunder Mifflin coworkers to impress Sabre special projects president…

The Good:

  • Cold Open: Funny. Funny. Funny. Maybe my favorite one yet. Because the show has been so uneven this season, it’s always nice to kick things off with a bang.
  • Dwight: Once again Dwight had a wealth of funny lines. He even was able to throw in some quality physical comedy. His reach for the projector screen was very funny.
  • Kathy the Temp-tress: There was only a brief moment when Kathy spoke to Jim, but no doubt the writers have something up their sleeves to make the world hate this woman for trying to score Jim Halpert.
  • Erin: In spots she had some killer funny moments. The opener with her waking up Ryan in bed was A-plus funny. And she looked good doing those jumping jacks.
  • Kenny Loggins – No Messina: How awesome is Florida Stanley? Rockin’ the red convertible with Kenny Loggins (NO Messina) cued up on the CD player? Yeah, that’s nice. The man knows how to embrace freedom from the family and the person we also know as Scranton Stanley.
  • “Send It To The Frickin Moon, Idiot”: My favorite line of the night, courtesy Dwight.
  • Nellie: I thought Catherine Tate did a bang-up job as the kooky President of Special Projects at Sabre.
  • Andy: The parts back at the office were just okay, but Andy totally loving his temporary role as receptionist was humorous.
  • Creed, Playwright: The man writes plays!

The Bad:

  • Office: They could have possibly stayed with the Florida storyline the entire time, but the office parts did continue, albeit briefly at the end, the upcoming action between Andy and Erin.
  • Robert California: I thought for sure he’d make an appearance. Hopefully we’ll have more of James Spader’s great character soon.

Overall:

Between “Special Project” and “Tallahassee” it’s fair to say that “The Office” is on a nice little run. Everything good and funny about last week’s episode spilled over to “Tallahassee”. And with the return of naughty Todd Packer and Nellie Bertram, the episode had a little extra pizzazz.

I am still unsure and unsettled about what the hell the writers have planned for Kathy and her Fatal Attraction thing going on with Jim. I was freaked out even by the brief encounter they had next to the alligator toys. What is the deal?!

Stanley and the red convertible might have stolen the show for me. And throw in the Kenny Loggins, ‘did I say Messina’ line, and I was laughing my ass off. Florida Stanley is a bad ass dude.

The ensemble did fine work and the writing was particularly strong.

As much I loved-loved the cold open, I also thought the moment with Andy peeking at Erin a photo rang true, and it sets up some good comedy-romance as the show heads into home.

Rating: 8/10
