Perhaps as some kind of consolation for the fact that we still live in a world that lacks flying cars, instant pizza, floating upside down Crispin Glover replacements, and Jaws 19 in holographic 3-D, toy manufacturers Mattel have decided to ease our postmodern ennui and finally give us something Back to the Future II promised us 23 years ago—hoverboards.
That’s right—Marty McFly’s floating board from Back to the Future II will be available for preorder in March, and will be set to ship out for Christmas 2012. However, one teeny tiny caveat before purchase—Mattel has noted that this board more or less “will glide” over most surfaces, rather than “hover” over them. They suggest you check back with them in 2015 if you’re a real hovering enthusiast.
Also, if you do still want one, be sure to tell your friends to make an order as well, because Mattel notes that “because this is such a high-cost item, there will be a minimum number of orders required to go into production. If we don’t receive the minimum orders, won’t go into production and customers will not be charged. The price will be announced later this month.” Also, be aware you probably shouldn’t use the device like over water like some bojo, because those boards don’t work on water. UNLESS YOU’VE GOT POWER.
What do you think of the hoverboard news?
