Since her Oscar nomination for 2000′s Almost Famous, Kate Hudson has followed the blueprint for starlets: Lots of romantic comedies, and at least one thriller. What she hasn’t done much of is acting, or at least acting more than “charming.” That is a skill-set unto itself, but she’s definitely fallen into a number of boring movies. So it’s good news that she’s been cast in the lead of Joe Lynch‘s thriller Everly, as we might see her do something interesting again.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, and gave the film’s logline, which is a film set in one room where a mob boss’s ex-girlfriend must defend herself from assassins. Perhaps Hudson was scared from more serious acting after appearing in Shekhar Kapur’s The Four Feathers in 2002. It had her, Heath Ledger and Wes Bentley in one of those classic attempts to create Oscar magic with an assemblage of previous nominated talents and hot stars of the day only to be less than the sum of its parts. Perhaps Hudson has more in her than the last ten years would suggest.
This is also good news for Joe Lynch, who’s latest film – Knights of Badassdom - has yet to receive a release date. Lynch has done some direct-to-video horror with Wrong Turn 2, and directed segments of the recent anthology film Chillerama. This appears to be is chance to go mainstream.
