The X Factor is one of the multiple variants on the huge success of American Idol, and there’s been a number of imitators of late because Idol is one of the few shows that routinely brings in tens of millions of viewers. Though its cast may not have been as high-profile as The Voice, X Factor did have the imprimatur of Simon Cowell – who made Idol what it is – and brought in Idol‘s Paula Abdul. But now that Season One has ended, The Hollywood Reporter has noted that Cowell fired Abdul, judge Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones.
Regardless, X Factor has solid – though not quite Idol – ratings, with 12.5 Million viewers for much of the run. The Reporter article suggests that Cowell is going back to tinker with the format, so that’s good news for LA Reid, the one judge who has yet to get his walking papers. It seems like the show is successful enough to continue, but perhaps with more famous judges.
Juggernauts like American Idol eventually crash and burn out – witness the success and eventual decimation of the Who Wants to be a Millionaire brand a couple of years back – though the mainstream has yet to grow tired with Idol. Spin-offs, and thinly veiled versions of the same thing often have the power to dilute, so it will be interesting to see how Cowell manages his shows.
