It’s amazing how fast rumors become truth, but as of now this is what’s known: Benedict Cumberbatch has joined the cast of Star Trek 2. What isn’t know is the role he’s playing, though it’s quickly gone from rumor to confirmation that he’s the villain of the piece. To be fair, most bigger casting decisions on a film like this are going to be for the new antagonists, but with J.J. Abrams‘s penchant for secrecy, who’s to say what he’s playing?
Cumberbatch is currently on screen in both War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and may be best known to geeks for his recent turn as Sherlock on the BBC show that’s quickly become a nerd favorite. He’s been a working actor for nearly a decade, but clearly this is his time, and he will also be doing the motion capture for the role of Smaug in The Hobbit.
As for his role, it’s possible that he’s the villain, and has taken the role that both Edgar Ramirez and Benicio Del Toro were rumored and/or passed on. Which would be that of Khan, unless the screenwriters have seen the fan ire, and done some rewriting. Surely what it is will get leaked shortly if they are trying to counter fan disappointment with the idea of rehashing Star Trek II for Star Trek 2.
