The details are chilling. in 1981 Natalie Wood – who had an intense fear of drowning – was on a boat one night with her husband Robert Wagner, Brainstorm co-star Christopher Walken and the boat’s captain when she hit her head and fell overboard. A woman at a neighboring boat heard calls for help at some point around that time, and someone responding with “Take it easy. We’ll be over to get you.” – though it’s unknown if that was Wood’s party. The next morning her body was discovered. The situation has always been mysterious, possibly hinky, and now the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office is reopening the case.
The Today Show got the boat’s captain Dennis Davern to talk today, and he laid the blame on Robert Wagner and lied when he was original investigated. This is the sort of thing that requires a grain of salt, as Davern has also written a book about the incident.
Natalie’s sister Lana Wood pressed for this investigation in 2010, and so now it’s happening, whether it’s a publicity stunt or if there’s new information, we may know more later today. There have long been rumors about Wood’s death, and there have been allegations that Walken was having an affair with Wood at the time. One would think there’s little to be done with a thirty year old death, and the flight risk for Walken and Wagner would be so high that they wouldn’t announce this if they were going to charge either with murder, but it’s hard to say.
