The Hunger Games, Lionsgate’s hyped attempt to capture the Twilight or Harry Potter audience, is hitting theaters in March of 2012, and so after countless casting announcements, and a teaser that said very, very little, here’s a trailer that sells Jennifer Lawrence as a hard fighting girl forced into a game that – depending on your frame of reference – will remind you of Battle Royale or The Running Man, or a handful of other science fiction premises.  Check out the trailer…

This mostly focuses on Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson as they prepare for combat, with brief moments from Donald Sutherland, Wes Bentley and Woody Harrelson, so it’s hard to know how much of the movie is preperation for the Games. Honestly, I think my enjoyment of the film will be higher if we’re just looking at the first thirty minutes or so.

As this is a book series, they’re going to be selling the heck out of the film, hoping to turn it into the next big something. There was a big audience for the books (at least as far as books go), and this looks to have way more cross-over appeal than Twilight, but Twilight didn’t need crossover appeal. Maybe neither does this. We’ll know March 23, 2012.

Did you know about The Hunger Games before they were going to make it into a movie?
