Huh. This is wild. No, not the fact that the already-classic South Korean mind-twister of a film Oldboy is being remade for English audiences. No, not the fact that it will be directed by Spike Lee. And, no, not the fact that Josh Brolin will play the aging protagonist who is embroiled in a tale of memory loss, kidnapping, torture, incest, and all sorts of other shenanigans. No, it’s the fact that the memorably twisted lead villain role has been offered to Colin Firth.
[MAJOR SPOILERS ABOUT THE ORIGINAL OLDBOY AHEAD! STOP READING IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT!]
It’s a surprising choice, as (assuming this remake follows the original film’s story) Colin Firth doesn’t seem to be the first person you think of playing a mysterious businessman who kidnaps Josh Brolin off the street, holds him captive for 15 years, release him, allow Brolin to meet the daughter he never knew, watch as the two unknowingly enter an incestuous sexual relationship, then tell Brolin what he’s done and cut out his tongue, all as revenge because Brolin caught Firth fooling around with his own sister back in high school. But hey, he rocked in The King’s Speech, so who knows?
