Last week it was reported that Kevin Costner was leaving Django Unchained, and today we’re hearing word that Kurt Russell is “in talks” to replace Costner in Quentin Tarantino‘s latest film. He would join Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson in the western opus. Tarantino and Russell last worked together in Tarantino’s half of Grindhouse, Death Proof.
The best part about being Quentin Tarantino, besides being Quentin Tarantino, is that it’s easy to find actors to work with you. A-listers love Quentin’s dialogue, and those who’ve fallen off the list have found that a good Tarantino role means renewed interest in their career. Dennis Christopher – probably best known for 1979′s Breaking Away – recently joined the cast, and that’s seen a huge profile-riser for him.
Shooting is scheduled to start soon for the film’s already-announced Christmas 2012 release. It’s just as possible Russell could drop out for any number of reasons, though that he’s worked with Tarantino before suggests that this would be a much easier leap than many other performers. It’s unknown if the role was too racy or weird for Costner, or perhaps he had legitimate scheduling conflicts with Man of Steel. Russell has a similar history with westerns (both played Wyatt Earp), and he definitely has the weight of a legend.
