Charlize Theron leads Jason Reitman‘s new film Young Adult as a youth fiction writer who returns to her hometown to run triumphant, only to discover that most people have moved on from high school. The film was written by Diablo Cody, and also features Patrick Wilson and Patton Oswalt. The film is scheduled for release on December 16th, which means that it’s definitely going for some Oscars. Take a look at the full poster after the jump.
Cody and Reitman’s last colaboration was Jennifer’s Body, which essays what they’re coming up against with this film. When the duo made Juno in 2007, both were fresh-faced and exciting, with a film that managed to feel familiar, but entirely its own.The work netted Cody an Oscar, and backlash was quick to set in.
Reitman then directed Up in the Air, which was well-received and considered a front runner until its chances imploded. Though there were other factors (namely, films like The Hurt Locker, Avatar and Inglourious Basterds), between a late-stage public fight over who deserved credit for the screenplay and Reitman’s public behavior and twitter comments, the film got six Oscar nominations and no wins. In the interim Cody worked on The United States of Tara – which ran three seasons – had a kid, and kept a relatively low profile. Young Adult is a big film for both of their careers. It will hurt if it doesn’t find an audience, and if the academy rejects it, it will suggest they are tired of both. Perhaps enough time and wounds have passed for Cody and Reitman to be underdogs yet again.
That poster image reminds me of a picture of Cody…
