“Not since Powder… has a movie seemed this questionable.” The Odd Life of Timothy Green trailer reveals the premise of the film, which is that would-be parents Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton want to have a baby, but have never heard of adoption so they bury some notes in the backyard, and get a child. Check it out…

This is a fairy tale premise, and so that’s a start – maybe it’s not as strange or borderline religious as it looks. In Pinocchio, Geppetto wanted a real live boy, where today a single father wanting a boy of his own might seem weird out of context. Perhaps we as an internet culture are too quick to judge things like this.

That said, the film doesn’t come out until August 2012, so perhaps this is a little film that is trying to get in the public’s consciousness now to get over the weirder elements of the narrative. It’s based on a story by Ahmet Zappa, and this is his first story credit. The film was written and directed by Peter Hedges, who recently did Dan in Real Life with Steve Carell. Nothing suggests he has the touch for light whimsy, but it’s a solid cast, and weird is not necessarily bad. Still, there’s a little bit of Powder there.
