Well, the comic book movie sequel that you’ve been waiting 21 long years to receive an ambiguous confirmation of has just been vaguely announced. Sort of. In a ‘kinda’ kind of way, really. So probably. But maybe not. But then again, maybe so. Translation: Warren Beatty announced this week, at a screening for his retro-cool 1990 film Dick Tracy, that “I’m gonna make another one,” according to /Film. Then he compared filmmaking to vomiting and spent the next 90 minutes talking about how he won’t talk about the sequel.
“I always think of making a movie like vomiting. I don’t like to vomit. But I get to a point sometimes where I think, ‘Okay, I better go ahead and do this and I’ll feel better.’ When I finally get around to making a movie, that’s why. I think I’ll feel better if I make this movie.”
Which sounds like a man ready to make a fun comic book movie, no? After all, Beatty’s been locked in a protracted lawsuit over just who owns the Tracy rights, a lawsuit he just recently won. Which means he’d be gung-ho to hit the ground running with Dick Tracy 2, correct?
“I think it’s dumb to talk about movie before you make them. I just don’t do it. It gives you a perfect excuse to avoid making them. The more you talk about it, the longer it’s hidden.”
Ok, fair enough. Any idea, though, about when he might start the shooting the film?
“You’d have to define ‘start.’”
Oh my God. I might as well just sit back and get comfortable, I get the feeling this is going to take awhile.
“I take so long to get around to making a movie that I don’t know when it starts. And I’m a very strong believer in the fact that when you’re really doing good work is when you don’t know you’re working and something just occurs to you. And you say ‘Oh, of course.’ My problem is I don’t know when I finish because I want to get it to what I think is right.”
Sigh. I’ll just wait until 2032 when Dick Tracy 2 finally hits theaters.
What do you think of the Dick Tracy news?
