Steve Coogan To Star In Biopic About British Porn Baron
By Travis Woods
Been feeling that there just haven’t been enough biopics about British porn barons lately? Yeah, me too. And, apparently, Steve Coogan has also felt that gaping void in our current cinematic trends, which is why he’ll be starring in the upcoming film about the life of Paul Raymond, “London strip club owner and porn baron.”
The Killer Inside Me director Michael Winterbottom is set to helm the film, which, according to the Guardian UK, “is expected to revive Winterbottom’s partnership with Coogan, which produced the films 24 Hour Party People, A Cock and Bull Story and the acclaimed recent television series The Trip.”
“Winterbottom’s company Revolution Films and Film4 are working together on a script for a biopic of the man who opened one of Britain’s first strip clubs, glitzy Soho haunt Raymond Revuebar, in 1958 and went on to publish the top-shelf magazines Razzle, Mayfair and Men Only… His breakthrough is often attributed to his decision to bypass restrictions on staged nudity by turning theatres into private clubs. In 1992 he was declared Britain’s richest man. He died in 2008.”
No word yet on we Yanks will get all competitive and decide to release a film about Hugh Hefner starring Matt Damon (only because he is contractually obligated to star in 83% of all American films, apparently).
What do you think of the Coogan casting news?
