With Cannes gearing up, we’re starting to see more from some of the films that will be “In Contention” this year. Lynne Ramsey’s We Need to Talk About Kevin is one of the most exciting as it’s been almost a decade since her last feature film, 2002′s Morven Callar. The new film stars Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly, and has yet to be picked up for American distribution. Septimovicio got the first stills, take a look…
Lynne Ramsey’s absence is partly because she was the original director on The Lovely Bones but got replaced by Peter Jackson. But Ramsey is one of the great working directors, something acknowledged by The Criterion Collection when they put her first film, 1999′s Ratcatcher, into their collection.
Again, the film does not yet have American distribution, but a big win would all but assure a film with such star power will see theatrical release. We’ll be following Cannes news and provide updates on the reactions and wins when they’re announced. There’s a lot of interesting films at Cannes this year, including the new Terrence Malick, but you never know what the Cannes group is going to react to – this isn’t the Academy awards, and there aren’t any Grand Prix prognosticators. And all for the better.
